So much of the Art today is shocking, disturbing, and offensive...but is that necessarily bad?
“All Art is quite useless.” These famous words by poet and playwright Oscar Wilde lead down a road Christians are often hesitant to follow. Does Art need to serve a function or purpose? Or should we, like WIlde, embrace the amazing uselessness of Art.
What's the role of the artist in the church? Or, perhaps more importantly,, what's the role of the church in the life of the artist?
Is God glorified when a sincere Christian makes a bad work of art? Does God only care about our hearts and inner-beauty? What significance, if any, should Christians give to outward beauty and expert craftsmanship?
Lewis and Tolkien will forever be linked together. Perhaps their great legacy, however, was the diverging paths they took in creating their art.
